The Specialties in Endocrinology and Metabolism

Our doctor, Professor S. Okamoto is a specialist of Endocrinology and Metabolism, and can treat or consult about related diseases with a high level of knowledge and skill in Japan. We summarize such diseases and the therapy as follows;

1) Hypopituitarism:

This disease is due to a pituitary tumor or post-removal of the tumor and other unknown causes. We treat the patients with hypopituitarism with hormone replacement therapy (HRT). With this HRT, the patients exhibiting all symptoms can be completely treated and can enjoy their healthy life.

2) Diabetes Mellitus:

This disease is due to the lack of an anti-diuretic hormone (ADH) from the posterior pituitary due to a tumor or unknown causes. These patients suffer from serious thirst and frequent urination. We treat these patients with Desmopressin, the derivative hormone (ADH). With this Desmopressin therapy, the patients will become free from such symptoms and can enjoy their healthy life.

3) Hypogonadism such as Kallmann syndrome:

This disease causes a lack of sexual development or deficiency of sexual function due to the congenital deficiency of gonadotropic hormones from the pituitary gland. Professor Okamoto is famous in Japan because he clarified one of the cases of Kallmann syndrome, KAL-1 gene abnormality in Japanese patients. We treat these patients with gonadotropin therapy and can complete their sexual development to adult level or keep the sexual functions at a normal level. With this therapy, these patients will have the ability to conceive children.

4) Hyperthyroidism, Graves’ disease or Basedow’s disease:

This disease is the over production of the thyroid hormone due to the special stimulating antibody to the thyroid gland. The patients suffer from severe palpitation, weight loss and specific eye symptoms. We can treat these patients with an anti-thyroid medicine and control their thyroid function at a normal level. After 2 or 3 years of this treatment, about 80% of patients can get remission from this disease. If a patient has an allergy to this anti-thyroid drug, we can introduce this patient to a specialist of thyroid surgery for the removal of the thyroid gland. After surgery, we admit these patients to control their thyroid function.

5) Hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s disease or other:

This disease is the decreasing of the thyroid hormone from the thyroid gland due to the destruction by autoimmune mechanism or post-surgery of a thyroid tumor. The patients with this disease suffer from general fatigue, lack of cold tolerance, constipation, weight gain and the reduction of mental abilities. We can treat these patients by administering the thyroid hormone. With the thyroid hormone replacement therapy, all patients become free from these symptoms and can enjoy their healthy life.

6) Thyroid tumor, nodular goiter:

In this disease, patients typically suffer from thyroid cancer and/or benign tumor(s). We can diagnose such thyroid tumors as cancerous or benign, through special ultrasonography and needle biopsy, from the method of the “Okamoto Biopsy Method” of which Prof. Okamoto safely devised. If the patients are diagnosed as having thyroid cancer, they can be introduced to a thyroid surgeon who has worked extensively with Prof. Okamoto.

7) Calcium abnormality due to parathyroid diseases:

Excess calcium in the blood is called hypercalcemia. Hypercalcedmia accompanies weakness of bone and kidney stones. The causes of this hypercalcemia sometimes occur by parathyroid hormone excess due to a parathyroid tumor. The decrease of blood calcium is called hypocalcemia. Hypocalcemia accompanies frequent muscle cramping and convulsion. The cause of this hypocalcemia occurs through parathyroid hormone deficiency due to the destruction of the parathyroid gland by an autoimmune mechanism. Our Dr. can diagnose and treat these diseases through his specialty.

8) Hypertension associated with endocrine diseases:

The elevation of blood pressure over 140mmHg / 90mmHg is diagnosed as hypertension. One of the causes of hypertension is the existence of endocrine disease. The cause of such hypertension are the adrenal hormone excess such as Cushing Syndrome or Primary aldosteronism and noradrenalin excess such as Pheochromocytoma. If you have hypertension, check the cause of you hypertension. Our Dr. is a specialist of hypertension of endocrine origin. He will analyze your hypertension and treat with the appropriate therapy.

9) Male hypogonadism, such as Klinefelter syndrome:

Hypogonadism is the medical term of dysfunction of the sexual organs. Our Dr. is a specialist of hypogonadism such as Klinefelter syndrome. He can treat not only through hormone replacement therapy but also with mental support to release their inferior complex.

10) Growth retardation associated with endocrine diseases:

Our Dr. devised a new screening method, WHAMES method, for early diagnosis in school children. Through this method, a lot of patients with growth retardation such as short stature, obesity, early sexual development and precocious puberty were found. This method is widely used in our country. Our Dr. treats these patients with growth hormone therapy or other hormone therapies. The Turner syndrome is also a target of this treatment of our Dr.

11) Gender Identity Disorder (GID):

In our clinic, about 30 patients with GID, female to male or male to female, are treated. Our Dr. diagnoses GID with the cooperation of a psychologist. 12) Diabetes Mellitus: Type 1 and Type 2
